Reflections

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.  In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.  The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1: 1-5

The book of Genesis says that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was formless and void. (Genesis 1:1-2)  John is telling us in the above scripture that in the beginning was the word, Jesus was the Word, and Jesus was with God.  Here we are told about Jesus’ deity. 

So when God created the heavens and earth, He spoke the word and whatever He spoke came into being.  In Genesis 1:3 God said “Let there be light,” and there was light.  So this is what John meant when he said that all things came into being through Jesus because Jesus was the word.  God created life and in Jesus was life, and that is why we are told He is the life.  Our very life comes through Jesus because God spoke us into being and created us.

Jesus existed before all of creation.  He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.  Nothing apart from Jesus can come into existence, because all things exist through Him.  Heaven and earth will pass away but the Word will never pass away because Jesus is the Word.  He is eternal.
