But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 1 Corinthians 14:3
When we think of prophets we often think of those who predict the future or say “Thus says the Lord…”. Prophesy in the church today is meant for strengthening, encouragement, and comfort. Prophesy is not meant to speak about the doom and gloom of the coming world.
In the Old Testament prophets spent a lot of time in the presence of God and would tell the people what God was saying. Today when we spend time in God’s presence especially in praying for others, God will also give us messages to tell others in a matter to strengthen, encourage, and comfort. So when God does give us a word for someone we should be eager to share that word.
However, many people wander if they are hearing from God. If it is a word that will strengthen, encourage, or comfort someone then it is a prophetic word. But in all we do as Christians we should ensure that the words we speak are for people’s encouragement and comfort and never to tear someone down. So the next time you see your brother or sister just prophesy a word to them. Your words may bring someone strength, encouragement, and comfort.
